Mayor’s Column

New information is continually becoming available regarding the status/spread of the coronavirus and what actions we should be taking. Our best defense to stop the spread of the virus is social distancing, stay at least 6 feet away from others not in your household. Hand washing needs to be practiced by all of us.

In recent days, the Centers for Disease Control has issued new guidance regarding cloth face covers for general use to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The CDC now recommends that all Americans wear cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain such as grocery stores and pharmacies and especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.

This recommendation asks that surgical masks and N95 respirators not be used by the general public as they are still in critically short supply and needed by our medical professionals and first responders.  The face cover helps stop the spread of the virus to others but remember you should still maintain six feet of separation even if everyone is wearing a mask. The CDC advises that cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under the age of two or anyone who has trouble breathing.
