SafeCam Program

Summer is a popular time for family vacations.

The Voorhees Twp. Police Department recommends conducting a safety check of your home or business during the summer months due to the increased risk of property crimes and environmental hazards that often occur during this time. Longer daylight hours and higher foot traffic can attract opportunistic thieves, while the heat and storm activity may expose structural vulnerabilities or fire hazards. Regularly inspecting locks, windows, outdoor lighting and smoke detectors helps prevent break-ins and ensures that your property is prepared for summer-specific risks such as electrical overloads or sudden storms.

An often-overlooked aspect of summer safety is vehicle security. With windows more likely to be left cracked open for ventilation and people frequently on the go, vehicles can become easy targets for theft. It is crucial to make locking your car every night a habit, regardless of whether it is parked in a driveway, garage or on the street. Unlocked vehicles provide easy access to criminals who may take advantage of even the briefest lapse in vigilance.

Additionally, valuables should never be left in plain sight inside your vehicle. Electronics, wallets, purses, or even shopping bags can tempt thieves looking for a quick opportunity. Removing or hiding such items significantly reduces the likelihood of a break-in. This simple step, combined with a consistent routine of locking up and conducting seasonal safety checks, helps protect not only your possessions but also contributes to the overall security and peace of mind in your home or business environment.

Our Police Department has also initiated a “SafeCam Program,” allowing the police to view residential and commercial security cameras to help solve crimes. Our police ask residents, businesses and organizations that have security cameras to complete a short registration form which allows our police to maintain a database of active cameras in the event a crime occurs in your area. The registration does not give police access to your camera system without your permission. Participating properties will receive a decal with the official Voorhees Police SafeCam Logo to display as an additional deterrent to crime. The registration form is on the Voorhees Police webpage, www.vtpd.com.

Crime prevention is the anticipation, recognition and appraisal of a crime risk and taking action to remove or reduce the risk. If you see a crime in progress or suspicious activity, or hear something strange such as a crash, loud bang or scream, you should immediately contact the Voorhees Township Police Department. Try to provide as much information as possible. In an emergency, dial 911. In a non-emergency, call (856)428-5400. The Police Department’s Anonymous Crime Tip Line is (856)627-7174.
