Echelon Mall Area Redevelopment

On October 27, the Voorhees Township Committee unanimously approved a Redevelopment Agreement with Hoboken Brownstone Company to launch a major revitalization of the former Echelon Mall area, now known as Voorhees Town Center. This transformational public–private partnership sets the stage for the property’s rebirth as a vibrant, mixed-use destination that will blend new housing, retail, and community spaces.

Under the Redevelopment Agreement, Hoboken Brownstone — a respected New Jersey developer known for successful urban renewal projects — will lead the Voorhees Town Center Phase 2 Redevelopment. The project aims to reimagine the once-bustling mall into a walkable, family-friendly town center while preserving key community assets, including Voorhees’ municipal complex.

The new plan includes a dynamic mix of residential, retail, and civic uses designed to foster a sense of community and attract new investment.

Key features of the project include:

207 market-rate townhomes
50 affordable for-sale townhomes and 60 affordable rental apartments
Over 38,000 square feet of new commercial and entertainment space
A multi-level parking garage offering 1,300–1,500 spaces
New park areas, bike paths, and landscaped public gathering spaces
A 30,000 sq. ft. donation of indoor space from Hoboken Brownstone to Voorhees Township for community use

This project marks a new beginning for Voorhees and the first step in redeveloping the mall. For decades, the Echelon Mall was the heartbeat of our community — a place where families gathered, friendships were built, and memories were made. While it has stood silent for too long, this redevelopment gives us the opportunity to bring that heartbeat back. We look forward to working with Hoboken Brownstone to reimagine this space as a vibrant center of life, energy, and connection for all who call Voorhees home.

The Redevelopment Agreement establishes a comprehensive framework between the Township and Hoboken Brownstone for financing, construction, and long-term community benefit. The project will be developed in two residential phases, with commercial redevelopment aligned to the final phase.

The developer will fulfill affordable housing obligations consistent with New Jersey’s Fair Housing Act, ensuring opportunities for families of all income levels and housing opportunities for veterans and first responders. The project also includes payments in lieu of taxes (PILOT) under state law to help balance redevelopment costs and sustain municipal services, adding millions of dollars of non-tax revenue for the town to help lessen the burden on Voorhees taxpayers.

This project creates housing options for young families and seniors, brings new businesses to our community, and strengthens our tax base — all while maintaining the character and quality of life our residents value.

Hoboken Brownstone Company brings decades of experience transforming underutilized properties into thriving, sustainable communities.

We are happy to share this exciting news with our residents. It supports the long-standing tradition of Voorhees being the best place in which to live, work and raise your family.

Public Service

Voorhees Township has provided services to our residents through our public service event outreach week in February and on individual service days throughout the year.

We offered a variety of important programs, including the annual rabies clinic, Real ID services from the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission, vehicle inspections by the NJ Motor Vehicle Inspection Unit, and tax assistance for seniors from the NJ Division of Taxation.

Additionally, we organized events that facilitated access to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), NJ Housing & Mortgage Finance, and Senior Citizens United Community Services (SCUCS), along with shredding services to enhance identity safety.

These initiatives made services more accessible for our community’s convenience. Residents received personal assistance through direct interactions with live representatives.

The following services were provided:

  • 437 NJMVC Real ID appointments
  • 144 NJMVC Vehicle Inspections
  • 62 NJ Division of Taxation Seniors Filings
  • 137 TSA Precheck Applications
  • 89 Rabies Vaccinations
  • 4415 lbs. of Shredding
  • NJ Housing & Mortgage Finance Programs
  • Senior Citizens United Community Services (SCUCS) Programs

These efforts made important services readily available right in our town, leading to agencies requesting a return in 2026. Follow our social media to take advantage of these services next year!

Fall Leaf Collection

Mayor Mignogna

While the fall season brings beautiful changes of leaves, fall also brings yardwork.

The Voorhees Township Public Works Department offers two options for leaf collection.

The first allows loose leaves to be left curbside, but only during the designated dates listed below. Residents can find the scheduled pick-up dates on the Voorhees Township website (www.voorheesnj.com.) and on the Voorhees Township Facebook page, Twitter, Instagram and Next Door pages. Also, signs will be posted at the entrance of each development prior to your scheduled week. Leaves should be raked to the curb line in front of your home the weekend prior to the scheduled week for your neighborhood’s pick-up. Leaf piles should be free of branches and twigs since such items clog the vacuum chute. Residents should also continue to place their grass in cans or biodegradable bags and not use plastic bags as they will not be accepted at our recycle facility.

The second option allows leaves to be put in trash cans or biodegradable bags to be placed curbside on Sunday after 4 p.m. and by 6 a.m. on Monday for pick-up Township wide. Leaves should not be mixed with regular trash as the leaves will be recycled separately.

Please refrain from putting tree trimmings or branches at curbside during leaf season. The chipper service will not be available. Please do not put leaves, grass or vegetative waste in blue trash carts or green recycling carts.

Fire Prevention Day

Since 1922, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)has sponsored the public observance of Fire Prevention Week. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance, making it the longest-running public health observance in our country at over 100 years. During Fire Prevention Week, firefighters provide lifesaving public education in an effort to drastically decrease casualties caused by fires.  According to NFPA, cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries in the United States.  Unattended cooking is the leading cause of cooking fires and deaths.  Year after year, cooking remains the leading cause of home fires by far, accounting for almost half of all U.S. home fires.

This year, the Voorhees Township Fire Department’s Annual Fire Prevention Awareness Day will be part of the HarvestFestival on Saturday, Oct. 18 from 11am to 5pm at the Town Center. All are invited to learn fire safety and enjoy the free fun-filled day of entertainment and learning.

Activities will include demonstrations from our firefighters, games, bounce houses, and Fire Prevention Education.  Children can try the fire safety obstacle course and the safety trailer (smokehouse). Fire apparatus will be present for kids of all ages to explore. There will also be giveaways from local businesses and our Voorhees Township Fire Department.

The Voorhees Township Fire Department strongly encourages every home to have a fire escape plan and offers the following tips:

Make sure your plan meets the needs of all your family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
Smoke alarms should be installed inside every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home. Smoke alarms should be a sealed 10- year battery type or hardwired with a battery backup and tested at least twice a year (change your clocks, change your batteries).
Know at least two ways out of every room, if possible. Make sure all doors and windows open easily.
Have an outside meeting place a safe distance from your home for family members to gather in the event of a fire.
Practice your home fire drill at least twice a year with everyone in the household, including guests. Practice at least once during the day and once at night.
Watch what you heat.  Always keep a close eye on what you are cooking.  Set a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove.  Always keep a lid nearby when cooking.  If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner.

Woofstock

The Voorhees Animal Orphanage (VAO) will hold its 29th Annual Woofstock Festival on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Voorhees Town Center (rain or shine).  It is the biggest fundraising event of the year for the Animal Orphanage. This year, Auto Lenders is the Platinum Sponsor for the event.

Woofstock is a day-long, outdoor festival that celebrates community and pets. It is a family friendly, fun-filled day with something for everyone, even your four-legged furry friends.  You can shop among many different local vendors. The last Woofstock had over 125 artisan, craft, retail and informational booths. There will be gourmet food trucks, animal rescue groups (many with adoptable animals), a kids corner and a gigantic gift basket raffle pavilion. It is a day where your well-behaved pets are more than welcome to attend and stroll the festival site with you. Enjoy music by Red Sky, dog demonstrations, a beer garden by Tonewood Brewing, a humongous gift basket raffle pavilion, the ever-popular VAO Alumni Parade led by Hegeman String Band and much more! Admission is a $2 donation. Children under 5 are admitted free.

The Voorhees Animal Orphanage (“VAO”) is a non-profit Municipal Animal Shelter dedicated to providing housing, food and medical care to stray and unwanted animals until permanent homes can be found. It is an open-intake animal shelter serving 26 municipalities in Southern New Jersey, 22 of which are in Camden County. The only income it receives are the monthly fees from the municipalities that it serves and adoption fees. Otherwise, it relies very heavily on the generosity of charitable donations to help meet its budget.

The VAO is also an Adoption Center. That means when space allows, it can rescue cats and dogs from overcrowded, high-kill shelters. The VAO works with local, regional and national shelters and rescue groups, saving lives wherever and whenever it can.  In 2024, the VAO saved the lives of over 2,360 cats and dogs that made their way to the shelter. The VAO has saved over 42,000 lives since its inception in 1988.

The VAO does not discriminate against any breed, nor does it turn any animal away due to medical conditions or age.  Each animal in the shelter receives individual consideration and attention, regardless of the number of animals in their care.

The VAO strives to be an exemplary shelter and adoption center through collaborative partnerships, responsible business practices and exceptional customer service.
