Mayor’s Column
Every 10 years since 1790, the United States has undertaken the monumental task of counting the population. An accurate census count is very important as the data obtained is used to determine our state’s representation in Congress as well as determining the manner of spending of more than $675 billion in federal funds. This money is to be used for local school programs, roads, hospitals, emergency services and more.
The first census was directed by Thomas Jefferson, then the Secretary of State, and counted the original 13 states and the districts of Kentucky, Maine, Vermont and the Southwest Territory (Tennessee). The 1790 record of population was 3,929,214. As of 2019, the population of the United States is 328,239,523.
