Mayor’s Column

When the Governor ordered the closing of all non-essential businesses and services, the Voorhees Township Committeeasked our Emergency Management Coordinator, Police Chief Lou Bordi, to develop a plan to make sure our residents in need were safe. Chief Bordi assembled a team to identify vulnerableresidents and services needed. Lieutenant Dan Sheets was put in charge of the People in Need (PIN) Task Force which went into action on March 23.

This Task Force reached out to the Voorhees Senior Club, various social service agencies and housing facility management offices to identify individuals in our community who might be atrisk during the COVID-19 pandemic. Others were identified through family members or a neighbor who contacted the Township expressing concern in light of self-isolatingrequirements.

The list of residents who were looking for assistance grew to over 350. Each was called or checked on every week. Some of the services that the Task Force provides includes food deliveries, medication deliveries, chaplain and prayer referrals, referrals for kosher meals, grocery delivery services andtransportation services. The members of the Task Force are alsoa voice to speak with and provide some comfort during the weeks of lockdown. Most of the work has been done by our Special Police Officers, whose normal schedule had them stationed in our schools, and our 10 Voorhees Police Chaplains.

The PIN Task Force continues to provide needed servicesand compassion. If you or someone you know needs help, call 856-428-5400 or visit www.vtpd.com.

The members of the Township Committee are very proud of the effort and compassion displayed by this group. They are doing a great job.
