In order for government to be “by the people,” we must exercise our right to vote. It is not only an important individual liberty; it is the foundation of free government.
The right to vote was initially established in 1789. In 1870, the 15th Amendment guaranteed the right to vote to all men who were 21 or older, regardless of race or ethnic background. In 1920, the 19th Amendment gave women aged 21 or older the right to vote. Finally, in 1971, the 26th Amendment lowered the voting age across the nation to 18.
In recent years, casting your ballot has been made even easier through the Vote by Mail Program. If you wish to take advantage of this program, applications can be obtained by visiting the County Store at the Voorhees Town Center or online at camdencounty.com/vbm. Applications for vote by mail ballots for the June 7 Primary Election must be received by the Camden County Clerk no later than May 31. Completed ballots must be received by the Camden County Board of Elections before the close of the polls on Primary Election Day. To confirm your ballot was received, visit trackmyballot.nj.gov
On Primary Election Day, voters will be casting ballots to elect one member of the House of Representatives, two members of the County Commissioners (formerly Freeholders), 10 Male Members of the County Republican Committee, 10 Female Members of the County Republican Committee, and one Voorhees Township Committee member. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Voorhees Township.

Any voter who is not listed on the voting rolls or is denied the right to vote, and who believes he or she is properly registered, can vote by way of a provisional ballot which will be reviewed by the Board of Elections to determine voter eligibility.

**A Community Clean-Up will be held at Stafford Woods on Evesham Road on Saturday, May 21, from 9:30am -12pm. Gloves, trash pokers and trash bags will be provided. The event is rain or shine and organized by the Voorhees Public Works Department in partnership with the Environmental Commission and the Cultural and Diversity Committee.
** Kindergarten registration for the Voorhees Township Schools is currently open and will remain open throughout the summer. Registration can be found at voorhees.12.nj.us.

** The Voorhees Arts Center re-opened on May 6 and will be open on Saturdays from noon to 6pm, Sundays from noon to 4pm and Thursdays from noon to 6pm. Programs will begin on May 21.
** The Annual Kirkwood Memorial Day Parade will begin at 11:00am at the former Carriage House Restaurant and end at the Veterans Memorial adjacent to the Kirkwood Fire Station on Burnt Mill Road. Following the parade there will be a wreath laying ceremony and memorial service at the Veterans Memorial. The parade depends on the weather, but the service is rain or shine. Special thanks to Terri and Vaughn Vandegrift for organizing this community tradition.
** Voorhees Township is offering discounted tickets to Morey’s Piers in Wildwood. Tickets are available in the Municipal Clerk’s Office at Voorhees Town Hall. Prices vary according to the type of ticket and several options are available to residents and non-residents. For more
